Sheep saved from large hay bale fire at Cumbrian farm

A fire which threatened the lives of 40 sheep in Cumbria has been extinguished by firefighters.

Crews from Cockermouth and Frizington were called to a farm in Mockerkin at 2:20pm on Sunday afternoon after reports of a hay bale blaze.

The fire was between farm buildings, and had spread to a pile of nearby tyres, which was close to a barn with dozens of ewes inside.

A spokesperson from Cockermouth Fire Station said: "It was quickly extinguished using hose reels, jets and compressed air foam."
