Artist pays tribute to the nation's hero Captain Tom Moore

An artist from Cumbria has paid tribute to the nation's newest hero Captain Tom Moore.

Paul Phillips, who is a former armed forces engineer, felt inspired by the 99-year-old veteran's fundraising efforts and decided to paint his black and white army portrait in full colour.

Captain Tom first set out to raise £1,000 for NHS Charities Together by walking 100 laps of his garden in Bedfordshire.

But has now raised more than £27 million, and says he plans to keep going so long as donations keep flowing in.

Paul spent ten years in the army and is a part-time dispatcher for Cumbria Police. He said he has painted many veterans in the past and is always inspired by them.

"Nothing seems to get these guys down", he said. It's hoped the painting, which took 40 hours to complete, will make its way down to Bedfordshire as a present for Captain Tom on his 100th birthday.
