Cave diver found dead near Kirkby Lonsdale

A man in his 40s has died in Cumbria after becoming trapped in one of the UK's largest underground cave networks.

The man's body was recovered at Lancaster Hole on Sunday evening. The teams had been called to the area by Cumbria Police shortly after 5pm after a diver was reported as being overdue.

More than 40 members of the Cave Rescue Organisation (CRO) and Cave Diving Group (CDG) were involved in the search.

Lancaster Hole is an access point to an extensive network of interconnecting underground limestone caves called the Three Counties System, which span Cumbria, Lancashire and the Yorkshire Dales.
