Thousands of chickens saved from slaughter find retirement homes
Thousands of chickens have all been adopted just one month after they were saved from the slaughterhouse.
Two animal sanctuaries in west Cumbria teamed up to raise more than £2,000 to save an estimated 3,000 hens.
The chickens were not laying eggs quickly enough to keep up with the industry, which led to Mel James from Ani-Mel Sanctuary, and Emma Kelt from Forever Friends, to take on the challenge of saving them all.
The pair raised £2,400 in 24-hours to buy the birds from a farmer who was contracted to send them to slaughter.
Donations came from all over the world, across the UK and as far afield as the US and Barbados.
After setting up a group on Facebook, Emma and Mel found homes for every single chicken.
Commenting on the rehoming, Emma said: "It's amazing. We can't believe we pulled it off.
"I'm already keeping an eye out in case any more need any help. People think I'm crazy but with the good team that we've got behind us we can do it.
"It's nice to know that these girls now have a future ahead of them."
