Schools, roads and events could be hit by D&G Council spending cuts

An extensive list of potential cost-cutting measures has been drawn up by Dumfries and Galloway council in an attempt to fill a £12m funding gap.

The authority has already agreed steps to save £3m in 2020-21, but needs to go further to bridge the gap.

It has put together a list of options to be considered in the months to come, including areas where money could be saved and plans to bring in more.

Proposed ways to increase revenue:

  • Increasing council tax by 3% each year for the next three years

  • Increased fees and charges at Stranraer and Kirkcudbright marinas

  • New charges for resident parking permits

Proposed cost-cutting measures include:

  • Reducing the number of subjects offered in secondary schools, with a focus on core subjects

  • Decreasing the road maintenance budget

  • A 30% drop in funding for major festivals and events

  • Reducing funding for library book stock

A series of "community conversations" are now planned across the region to hear the public's views on the proposals.
