Police continue quarry search linked to 1970s murder investigation

Police are continuing to search a quarry in the north east of Scotland, as part of an investigation into the disappearance of a woman and her three-year-old son more than 40 years ago.

Renee and Andrew MacRae were last seen driving out of Inverness on November 12, 1976.

A 77-year-old Penrith man was arrested over their deaths and appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court.

William MacDowell is accused of murdering both of them and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

MacDowell made no plea or declaration during the private hearing on Wednesday and the case was committed for further examination.

He was bailed and is expected to appear in court at a later date.
