Cumbria police launches recruitment drive

Cumbria Constabulary have launched a recruitment drive to increase the number of police officers serving the county in response.

It's part of a national campaign to recruit 20,000 extra police officers.

The push for more police on the streets was one of Boris Johnson’s key Tory leadership campaign promises, and the Prime Minister has since said the goal will be achieved within three years.

The official number that the county will be allocated has yet to be confirmed, but Cumbria police says it will be a significant addition to the force.

Sajid Javid promised £750 million to fund the first year of the project, during which it is hoped 6,000 new officers will be put in place.

The chancellor said in his spending round on 4 September an extra £45 million would be spent this year to recruit the first 2,000 police officers by the end of March.

The pledge has seen criticism over cuts which saw the number of officers slashed by 20,000 after 2010, and there have been warning about the time it takes to train new officers.

The campaign issued by the Home Office urges would-be recruits to “be a force for all.”
