Social media reacts to Ben Stokes' Test match heroics

Cricketer Ben Stokes has been hailed a hero for his part in England's 'once in a generation comeback' as they beat Australia in the third Ashes Test at Headingley.

Stokes hit 135 to earn an unexpected victory. His performance is being called one of the greatest in test cricket history.

"Today was incredible," Stokes said. "I don't quite know what to say. It hasn't sunk in yet."

After the match appreciation for Ben Stokes' century went viral on Twitter with sporting greats like Gary Lineker calling for the cricketer to be knighted with #AriseSirBenStokes.

England bowler Stuart Broad posted a photo of Stokes in the changing rooms post-match, "not sure he can believe what he's just done".

Piers Morgan tweeted his "hysteria and love" from his yacht in Monaco.

England play Australia for the fourth test at Old Trafford on Wednesday 4 September.
