Workington will not host 2021 Rugby League World Cup

The Rugby League World Cup will not be hosted in Workington in 2021.

This comes after Allerdale Borough Council rejected plans to build a new multi-million pound stadium at Workington Reds’ Borough Park site.

The council have been asked to consider scaling-back the project as the original plans would put them under ‘considerable financial risk’.

As a result of this decision, they are unable to go ahead with the RLWC’s deadlines.

Allerdale have said “the council is extremely disappointed the RLWC will not be coming to west Cumbria in 2021.”

The council leader, Marion Fitzgerald added:
