Carlisle Airport: Then and now
The airfield started life as an RAF training base during the Second World War.
After the war, the base closed in 1947. Since then there have been numerous attempts, all failures, to provide a successful commercial passenger flight service.
Here is a brief history of the airport:
Before flights got off the ground, the airport was used to host a number of live music events.
In May 2011, the space became the venue for Radio 1's famous Big Weekend.
The two day music event saw big stars such as Lady Gaga, The Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys and The Swedish House Mafia perform in Carlisle.
