A new 40-mile recreational route on the Cumbrian coast featuring cycling facilities and art installations has been given the green light.

The Connecting Cumbria's Hidden Coast project led by Copeland Borough Council has been awarded more than £1million from the Government's Coastal Communities Fund. Sellafield Ltd is also contributing £600,000 towards the scheme.

The route will stretch from Whitehaven to Millom and largely follow the route of the designated English Coastal Path.

In phase one the project will include:

  • Hub at Silecroft beach that will house a café and toilet/shower facilities

  • Climbing wall at Muncaster Castle

  • Links to Wheels For All Hub, an inclusive cycling centre

  • 1.4km of new cycle path

  • 1.8km of new or improved footpaths

  • 10 art installations

  • Digital apps, signage and maps

Copeland Borough Council hopes the scheme can attract further funding for a phase two stage that would include another crossing over the River Esk, more art installations and kite surfing or sea kayaking from the Silecroft hub.
