Carlisle-born former Liverpool and England star dies at 76
Carlisle-born former Liverpool and England winger Peter Thompson has died at the age of 76.
Whilst playing for Preston North End in 1963 at the age of seventeen, he came to the Merseyside club’s attention by knocking them out of the FA Cup.
Just three years later, he helped Liverpool win the FA Cup for the first time in the club's history.
He went on to play in the European Cup Winners' Cup final 1966.
Over his career, Thompson, who went to school in Harraby, scored over fifty goals and appeared four-hundred times for Liverpool. He was capped sixteen times by England.
The Club has paid tribute to the former player on their website and Twitter.
