Honister zip wire plans given the go ahead

In a meeting this morning it was decided that plans for a zip wire at Honister Slate Mine would be "subjected to delegated approval".

This means the proposal for a 1km long line, linking the top of Honister Crag and the mine's car park, would be given the go ahead as long as it agrees to terms set by the Lake District National Park Authority.

A number of organisations have supported the idea and believe it would benefit the area by introducing more 'adventure tourism.' The attraction would be located next to the Via Ferratta.

Friends of the Lake District and Natural England have opposed the plans, that have previously been rejected.

Back in 2011 and 2012, the controversial plans were put forward and refused because opposition said it had the possibility of interrupting the 'remoteness' and 'tranquility' of the area, as well as the nature and wildlife.

The proposal says the zip wire would carry a maximum of fifty-seven people a day, during a busy summer and also suggests the device could transfer slate down the crag.
