The M6 will remain closed in both directions between J32 and J33 in Lancashire overnight.

A lorry hit a bridge between Broughton and Galgate on the southbound carriageway, just before 7.00am this morning.

The support pillar helping to hold up the bridge has been so badly damaged that the bridge needs to be propped up before the lorry and the pier can be removed and the motorway safely reopened.

The motorway has been closed in both directions since around 7.30am this morning.

Officers have been handing out food and water to motorists stuck on the M6.
