Mountain rescuers have revealed that a fell runner died in the Lake District last week after becoming separated from his partner during a fell running challenge.

A major search was conducted to find the 36-year-old male, from Poland, who had been taking part in the Bob Graham Round when he was reported missing on Tuesday 1 May.

The search involved more than 100 rescuers, nine dogs, a coastguard helicopter, the North West Ambulance Service Air Desk and Cumbria Police.

The runners had been coming down from Red Pike and heading towards Little Scoat Fell when they lost eachother.

Wasdale, Cockermouth and Keswick mountain rescue teams searched for the missing fell-runner in extreme weather conditions until 2am on Wednesday morning.

A decision was made to call off the search until first light, and started again at 5am with help from a further five mountain rescue teams and the coastguard search and rescue helicopter.

At around 7.30am, the missing fell runner was found dead and was flown by coastguard helicopter to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
