Copeland councillor numbers cut for first time in more than 40 years
Copeland Borough Council is set to cut its councillor numbers from 51 to 33.
The Local Government Boundary Commission has announced the decision following the Elected Mayor Mike Starkie’s request in August 2017.
The reduction of 18 councillors will take effect in May 2019, and will be the first cuts made since the council was formed in 1974 - more than 40 years ago.
It is expected to save the authority just under £55,500 a year, totalling nearly £222,000 during the four year term in office.
The Mayor of Copeland expressed his support in a statement on Facebook:
