Councillors have confirmed the closure of a popular car park in Kendal.

The common land at New Road is closed to vehicles from today, Monday 18 September.

South Lakeland District Council upheld a Cabinet decision to close the car park on Friday 15 September on grounds that it was unsafe.

It has previously been used as an unofficial free car park for up to 180 vehicles.

Friday's meeting reviewed the decision to close the car park and concluded residents would have their say over plans for the long-term development.

Works will now begin to make the site safe and accessible, before the long-term use and design of the site is decided.

Overview and Scrutiny Committee member Councillor Nick Cotton told Friday’s meeting:

The meeting heard views from councillors, as well as residents opposed to the closure and a representative of Kendal Business Improvement District, which supports the idea of developing the land for community use.

On Wednesday 13 September, a number of alternative parking options were noted for vehicles no longer able to park at New Road:
