A cyclist remains critically injured in hospital, following a crash with a car in Ulverston in which the driver failed to stop.

Police were actively looking for the vehicle - a black Volkswagen Polo - at the time, but say they are not treating the crash as having followed a police pursuit.

They say other incidents were reported in the Lancashire area before the crash in Ulverston, on the A5087 at the junction of Park Road and Priory Road, yesterday afternoon.

The vehicle has since been found abandoned in the area by the police.

The cyclist, a 24-year-old man from the Ulverston area, was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital by air ambulance, where he remains in a critical condition.

Police are continuing to appeal for anyone with information to contact them, but have warned people not to approach the man they believe was the driver.

He is described as being 5'10", with dark blonde hair, of stocky build, wearing jeans and a white-coloured t-shirt.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been notified of the incident, and Cumbria Police say this is because someone suffered a serious injury as part of an incident police were already investigating.
