A wildlife rescue centre has been taking in a record number of injured or orphaned gulls.

The Knoxwood Wildlife Trust, near Wigton in Cumbria, is currently nursing back to health more than 100 birds and hope to release them over the next few weeks.

Some are herring gulls, which are on the endangered list, due to falling numbers.

Some gulls have been hit by cars on purpose but the majority are young birds, some are orphaned. They are being fed on a diet of fresh fish. Staff at the Trust can carry out some surgeries on injured birds but more invasive surgeries are carried out by vets.
