Theresa May raises 'Chennai Six' case with Indian PM
UK Prime Minister, Theresa May, brought up the case of the 'Chennai Six' with India Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G20 summit.
The pair met to discuss various issues indling the economy, trade and security.
29-year-old John Armstrong from Wigton is one of the six former British army members jailed in January 2016.
The other men include Billy Irving, from Connel, Argyll and Bute, Nick Dunn, from Ashington, Northumberland, Ray Tindall from Chester, Paul Towers, from Yorkshire and Nicholas Simpson, from Catterick, North Yorkshire.
The case has been branded a miscarriage of justice by the men's families and friends who have been protesting their innocence since their initial arrest on an illegal weapons charges in October 2013.
They were working for US maritime company AdvanFort providing anti-piracy protection when their ship, MV Seaman Guard Ohio, which had a crew of 35, was detained and weapons found.
The initial charges were dropped in the following months, but an appeal followed from the Indian authorities and the men were later convicted and sentenced to five years in jail.
Theresa May said she hoped for news of a verdict in the case shortly, government officials said.
