A speech and language therapist from Cumbria has recently returned from a trip to Myanmar where she has been training local therapists.

Lindsay King, works with Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s Acquired Brain Injury team (ABI) and spent three months volunteering in Myanmar, where there is no training programme for Speech and Language Therapy.

She was involved in teaching local physiotherapists about communication and swallowing problems in adults with neurological conditions such as a stroke or epilepsy.

Lindsay also visited the Royal Asia Hospital, where the new Neurology team were working on setting up a stroke service for in-patients, despite limited funds.

The ABI team provide rehabilitation to adults who have suffered a brain injury caused by a fall, accident or illness and have difficulties returning to their normal life style.
