Controversial South Lakes Safari Zoo could get new licence
A controversial zoo in south Cumbria could be set to receive a new licence to continue operating.
Last month David Gill, the founder and owner, was refused a licence and ordered to close the zoo, after inspectors raised major concerns over animal welfare.
In a report about the zoo, in Dalton-in-Furness, they found a series of failings, and highlighted almost 500 animal deaths between 2013 and 2016.
David Gill's management style was is described as "intrusive".
However, in January he handed over the running of the zoo to a new company, Cumbria Zoo Company Limited.
They have undergone three inspections since January, and inspectors have recommended that Barrow Borough Council grants them a licence to remain open.
The council licensing committee will hear the zoo licence application on 9 May.
If it is successful the management team of Cumbria Zoo Company Limited will buy the zoo from Mr Gill.
