WATCH: Remembering Donald Campbell

Fifty years ago today Donald Campbell died on Coniston Water, attempting to push his own world water speed record over 300mph.

But it ended in disaster when his boat, Bluebird, flipped in the air and crashed, killing him instantly.

Paul Crone has been finding out what happened fifty years ago on Coniston, and why it happened:

Donald Campbell's boat, Bluebird, lay hidden on the bottom of Coniston Water for 34 years, until a diver from the North East came across it in 2001.

At first the family didn't want here brought to the surface, but with the threat of bounty hunters looming, it was agreed she should be relocated to a museum - but not before years of restoration.
