Detective demoted following Poppi Worthington investigation
A Detective Inspector at Cumbria Police has been demoted, following an assessment of their performance investigating the death of Poppi Worthington.
The 13-month-old girl died in December 2012, after being found at her home in Barrow-in-Furness with serious injuries.
Cumbria Police was heavily criticised for its investigation into her death, and earlier this year conceded it "fell well short" of expected standards.
The Constabulary made a self-referral to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) in June 2014, following concerns about the initial investigation.
This week the officer admitted that their actions amounted to Gross Incompetence before a panel, which was chaired by an independent senior officer from outside the Constabulary.
The panel supported that verdict, and immediately demoted the officer from Detective Inspector to the rank of Sergeant.
The Constabulary will now consider the role that the officer - who has not been identified - will undertake.
