Anger over £10,000 ticket machines for Windermere ferry
There's renewed anger on Windermere as Cumbria County Council has spent another £10,000 on ticket machines for the Windermere Ferry, which opponents say are causing delays for passengers and wasting public money.
Three machines were installed in June to replace a quaint system where ferry workers would take cash on board.
Cumbria County Council says at peak times up to 40% of walkers and cyclists would ride for free because the seven-minute journey wasn't long enough to collect all fares. The new system means you can pay by card too.
But the machines have caused long queues and locals in particular are angry.
At the weekend, our South Lakes reporter Fiona Marley Paterson found an angry queue of tourists and locals waiting to board the ferry on a sunny Saturday.
Passengers voiced their anger at staff as the ferry came and went while they waited in a long queue. Foreign tourists in particular said they found the machine confusing.
The council says it's looking to make the software simpler - but campaigners say the £25,000 spent on the machines has been a waste of tax payer's money.
The Windermere Ferry could take up to £700,000 a year but recently it's been losing money, so the Council says it's important to make sure everyone pays.
But campaigners say the machines are an embarrassing mistake.
