More Michelin stars for Cumbrian restaurants
Three Cumbrian restaurants have been published in the 2017 Michelin Guide, with two new one-stars awarded.
L'Enclume at Cartmel, owned by Simon Rogan, has maintained it's second Michelin star, which was originally awarded in 2012.
The Gilpin Hotel and Lake House received a one-Michelin-star rating, alongside Forest Side at Grasmere.
What are Michelin stars?
Michelin stars are an official hallmark of fine dining quality, with a ratings system from one to three.
The Michelin food review idea started in 1900, when the tyre company Michelin launched its first guidebook to encourage people to road trip in France.
The guidebook showed French drivers where to find local amenities like restaurants and mechanics.
In 1925, Michelin started sending out anonymous restaurant reviewers to try restaurants and give them a rating, which was then published in the yearly guidebook. In 1933, the company added second and third stars to its ratings.
To this day, Michelin relies on a full-time team of anonymous restaurant reviewers to rate and award restaurants across the world.
The Michelin stars themselves are an extremely prestigious accolade in the culinary industry, and there's only 8 three-Michelin-star restaurants in the UK.
