Severe delays to trains around Carlisle and the Lake District

An engineering train has derailed between Lancaster and Oxenholme Lake District.

It's causing big delays on services around Carlisle and the wider Lake District.

National Rail has released the following information.

The following alterations will apply:

  • TransPennine Express services between Manchester Airport and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh will not run between Lancaster and Carlisle

  • TransPennine Express passengers should use Virgin Trains services between Oxenholme Lake District and Carlisle

  • Buses are running between Lancaster and Oxenholme Lake District

  • Virgin Trains services will not run between Preston and Oxenholme Lake District

  • Buses are running between Preston and Carlisle

  • Northern services between Oxenholme Lake District and Windermere are cancelled.

  • Buses are running between Oxenholme Lake District and Windermere, calling at Kendal

  • Passengers for Burneside and Staveley should speak to station staff or the bus driver to arrange alternative transport

Disruption is expected to continue until approximately 9pm tonight.

  • Virgin Trains East Coast between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh
