Mountain Rescue Teams: Too many rescues are preventable

The Lake District's Mountain Search and Rescue Teams were called out 25 times last week - their busiest week of 2016.

Wasdale's team took 12 of those calls and they say eight of them were avoidable as they helped people who hadn't taken the right equipment onto the fells and didn't have good enough navigational skills for the area and the weather.

One of the rescues was for two men who got lost on Great Gable. The mist came down and they found themselves on steep scree (loose rocks) and had to be escorted down by mountain rescuers.

Our mountain rescue teams are set for their busiest year ever and bad weather at the height of the tourist season hasn't helped.

They're urging us to be more cautious and better prepared.

Here's a 45-second lesson with Richard Warren that might just save your life. He's explaining how to use a map and compass to our reporter Fiona Marley Paterson.

One of the genuine emergencies last week was attended by Keswick Mountain Rescue Team, who saved the life of a paraglider who crashed into Blencathra.
