Lest We Forget: Centenary of the Battle of the Somme

Vigils have been held in the region to mark the 100th anniversary of the battle of the Somme.

Hundreds of people gathered at Carlisle's war memorial in Rickerby Park last night to remember those who fought and died in the battle. Services will also be held in parts of the region at 7.30 this morning (July 1), the time the battle started a century ago.

The message was that those who fought should never be forgotten.
