Wildfire rips through acres of Lake District fells

Mountain rescue and fire fighting teams from Penrith, Keswick and Sedbergh have been helping tackle a wildfire which is still burning near Mungrisdale, in the Lake District

The fire began on Monday and is suspected to have been caused by a discarded disposable barbeque.

The blaze quickly spread out over an area of 800 square metres, despite the efforts of passersby who tried to contain the blaze using wet towels and clothes.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue had been battling the fire since Monday, and had to call upon the county's Mountain Rescue Teams to help advise and assist them on the rocky terrain.
