A591 to re-open tomorrow

The A591 connecting the north of the Lake District to the south will re-open tomorrow, Cumbria County Council has tweeted.

The road will open three weeks ahead of schedule.

When Cumbria County Council originally announced it was likely to re-open at the end of May, local campaigners argued this would devastate businesses.

The road was severely damaged during the flooding caused by Storms Desmond and Eva in December 2015.
