A man has been jailed for a year after he stole property from outside flood-damaged Carlisle homes.

Krzysztof Lesny, 30, equipped himself with bolt cutters and a crow bar as he sought to target devastated homes in Greystone Road in total darkness on 9th December.

Police on foot patrol to deter thieves found Lesny in a vehicle just after midnight close to abandoned homes. He was also in possession of a balaclava, gloves and a holdall.

He admitted stealing a shelving unit from a skip, but later conceded in an interview that he would have taken more items had he not been arrested.

Carlisle Crown Court was told that Lesny's Warwick Road home had also been flooded during Storm Desmond. Since committing his crimes, he had made a donation to the flood recovery fund.

But today, having admitted going equipped for burglary and theft, Lesny was jailed for 12 months by Judge Peter Davies, who said he could expect "no sympathy".
