Fear and loathing across Cumbria as Storm Eva approaches

There's widespread fear in parts of Cumbria that heavy rain over the Christmas period will being more misery from flooding.

Storm Eva is expected to sweep across the country on Christmas night. A number of weather warnings have been issued.

And to make matters worse, many people say that money promised to help them rebuild their lives and livelihoods after Storm Desmond just isn't getting through.

There are 3,000 properties across South Lakeland affected by the flooding, with the majority in Kendal. Homeowners can apply for an initial £500 in emergency funding and up to £5,000 to flood proof their homes in the future, as well as aid administered by the Cumbria Community Foundation.

But residents in Kendal say the process is complicated and they need it now.

Westmorland Crossfit and Castle Ironworks Gym has only been open 3 months and now almost everything needs to be replaced.

That means their biggest expense, getting the business started, now needs to be shelled out for again.

Owners Kelly and Lisa Screen discovered they have a surprise £5,000 excess on their insurance in case of flood, that they say is hard to find when the business is so new and hasn't generated cash flow yet.

The council says it's getting the money out as soon as it's approved by Government.

But that's not enough for the local MP. The Government's given £60million to councils in flooded areas, but Tim Farron wants more.

At Triple D Motorsport things are more positive. Neil Crayston's lost about £40,000 worth of stock but he's made a start on the grant forms and says his insurers have been helpful.

Kendal has basked in sunshine today but it's the calm before Storm Eva. More heavy rain for Christmas Eve to Boxing Day is not what anyone wants to here. That means more worry for many, on top of huge financial pressures.
