Kendal's first enterprise centre is being opened today.

The MintWorks, at 124 Highgate, will give start up companies and small businesses flexible office space.

South Lakeland District Council's (SLDC's) economic development team got the money together to bring a long-empty prominent building in the town centre back into use.

The new name 'The MintWorks' has associations with the world-renowned Kendal Mint Cake, and it's hoped it'll boost business in the town:

The refurbishment started in September and has included new windows, car park improvements, and an internal revamp and modernisation.

The space will provide 10 flexible offices of various sizes, as well as meeting and conference facilities for business events, skills training and networking.

124 Highgate used to house the Connexions careers service.

It's hoped this project will provide an environment for businesses to grow and will directly support up to 25 jobs, with the possibility of more being created in the future.

The council says there has already been a high level of demand for the units and many are already let, with particular interest from digital, creative and high-tech firms.
