A miniature railway in Carlisle is preparing to mark a double landmark next year.

It will be 80 years since the society which runs it was founded and 70 years since the track was first laid in Carlisle's Hammond's Pond.

Started just after World War Two the railway is run by members of the Carlisle and District model engineering society.

The railway has been been kept going by a dedicated group of enthusiasts. Many of them have built there own locomotives, like former train driver Geoff Routledge. One took him 13 years to make.

But as well as their own enjoyment it's the pleasure of others that keeps them coming back.

Children seem to love it. The teacher of a group of nursery school children described their trip on the train.

The trains run every Sunday afternoon from Easter to the end of October and next year will be a special one for the society which runs it.

Whatever its age, for the passengers the sense of fun here is timeless.
