A fisherman has reported spotting a sperm whale off the coast of Dumfries and Galloway.
Simon Olley saw the ten-metre long whale milling about on the surface just north of Portpatrick.
The sperm whale typically lives in waters of 1,000 metres depth or more, and was made famous in Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick.
Kathy James, Sightings Officer for the Sea Watch Foundation, says it's likely Simon did see a sperm whale:
According to Sea Watch’s national database, there have only around 100 separate sightings of sperm whales in British waters, in the last 40 years.
