Soldiers who helped to build a temporary footbridge in Workington, after floods devastated the town in 2009, are returning for the first time.

Members of the 3 Armoured Engineer Squadron will meet the Mayor of Allerdale, and members of Allerdale Borough Council staff, for a tour of the bridge site.

They were involved in the construction of Barker Crossing.

The temporary bridge over the River Derwent was named after PC Bill Barker, who died when Northside Bridge collapsed at the height of the floods, on Friday, 20 November.

The soldiers will then climb Scafell Pike, as part of the three-peak challenge.

PC Bill Barker's wife, Hazel, received the Queen's Commendation in 2012, on behalf of her husband for his bravery.
