How Galashiels' history could power its future
The water mills that were once at the heart of industry in Galashiels, could soon be brought back to life.
Funding has been granted to a community group that wants to bring hydro-electricity back to the town.
But why turn the Gala Water into an energy source?
Energise Galashiels, the community group at the centre of the project, wants to harness the river, which has powered Galashiels in the past, to reduce carbon emissions in the town.
The town has a real history when it comes to the energy generated by water flow, because of its textile mills.
Mill lades were built to meet the demands of the industrial revolution, and the group hopes they could generate enough power for 1,000 properties in the town.
