Wanted: volunteers to tempt tourists to Brockhole

The Lake District National Park Authority wants to recruit 10 volunteers to meet tourists getting on Windermere cruises, and encourage them to stop off at Brockhole:

For many years the Lake District National Park Authority's Brockhole visitor centre on Windermere struggled to get enough visitors and cost hundreds of thousands of pounds every year.

But recently it's managed to increase its visitor numbers, largely down to being re-marketed as a taster hub for outdoor sports, and it's becoming more self-sufficient.

It's hoped the volunteers will help to boost numbers a little more over the summer months, and to encourage more visitors to use greener forms of transport.

The Lake District National Park Authority has 422 volunteers around the National Park, doing everything from managing the countryside to manning the visitor centres.

Now it wants another 10 volunteers to do this work:

Volunteering in Cumbria is very popular. Many people who move to the Lake District for retirement decide to give some of their time to charities and they're proving to be the backbone of life in the county.

It's hoped this new role will help Brockhole climb to a brighter future.
