Cumbria Police are warning people in North Cumbria to take care, after dealing with a spate of insecure break-ins in the past month.

An insecure break-in is when the window, or door, of a property is left open, and used by someone to break in.

In May 2015:

Police say the high number of such incidents could be down to the good weather - sunshine means people are more likely to leave windows and doors open.

Cumbria Police are advising people in the region to follow these tips:

  • When leaving the house, make sure windows are shut

  • Lock the doors, if you leave the house, or go upstairs

  • Fit good locks on all points of access

  • Keep an eye - and a lock - on your garden shed and outdoors equipment, too

  • Secure any bicycles

  • Let neighbours know if you're heading away on holiday
