Sue Hayman has been elected Labour MP for the Workington constituency, becoming the first female MP to be elected in the Border region.

Workington is traditionally a safe seat for the party, with it having had a Labour MP for the past century.

The previous incumbent, Sir Tony Cunningham, held the seat for 14 years but retired this year.

Ms Hayman has worked as a Cumbria County Councillor, and as vice-chair of the Children’s and Young People’s Scrutiny Committee.

She sings in a local choir, and enjoys cooking, walking her dog on the fells, gardening and reading.
