Upland areas: the facts

A new partnership has formed that will focus on protecting Cumbria's high ground.

The group, the Uplands Alliance, will bring together people who use the land, such as farmers, with researchers and policy makers.

But how important are areas like the Lake District's uplands?

England's uplands are the source of 70% of our drinking water.

But upland areas are also important for issues like:

  • timber and food production

  • biodiversity

  • carbon storage

They are home to half of the UK's sites of special scientific interest, and 74% of national parks are in the uplands.

Those involved in the new project say that it's crucial to ensure the uplands are protected for future generations.
