Carlisle high street 'one of the healthiest' in country

Carlisle high street did well.

Carlisle has one of the healthiest high streets in the country, according to a new study.

The Royal Society for Public Health assessed 70 places according to the types of businesses found there.

Loan shops, bookmakers, tanning salons and fast food outlets all contributed to a low score, while leisure centres, libraries and health services were seen to have a positive impact on public health.

Britain's healthiest high streets:

  • 1 - Shrewsbury

  • 2 - Ayr

  • 3 - Salisbury

  • 4 - Perth

  • 5 - Hereford

  • 6 - Carlisle

  • 7 - Cambridge

  • 8 - Cheltenham

  • 9 - York

  • 10 - Bristol

The study took into account Carlisle's city centre, including streets like Botchergate, where most of the fast food outlets are situated.
