Call to help Cumbria butterflies
A wildlife charity is calling for Cumbrians to help protect a rare butterfly, which is disappearing from the county.
Butterfly Conservation says numbers of the Pearl-bordered Fritillary, which used to be a common sight in the region, are dwindling.
Since the 1950s the number of Pearl-bordered Fritillary butterflies across the UK have declined to the point that it’s now recognised as one of the country’s most endangered butterflies.
It traditionally made its home in woodland, but today colonies are mostly found on hills where gorse or bracken is regularly burnt or cut back.
