Wainwright's original notebook auctioned
One of Alfred Wainwright's original notebooks has gone under the hammer in Carlisle.
Wainwright was widely regarded as the leading expert on the Lake District's fells.
His seven volume pictorial guide has become the standard reference book for walkers in Cumbria.
The blue bound ledger which contains original drawings, maps and observations from Alfred Wainwright's own walks has exceeded the auctioneer's expectations by selling for £8,600.
Carlisle's H&H Auction Rooms in Carlisle were packed ahead of the sale.
Auctioneer Georgina NIxon confirmed that the notebook had serious telephone bidders from inside the county and beyond before the auction took place.
The auction took some time to reach its climax, here's an edited version of the bidding process:
In the end the winning bid came from a consortium representing the Wainwright Society. they have decided to donate the notebook and maps to Cumbria Record Service who bought Alfred Wainwright's own personal archive last year.
