Medal for widow whose husband fought in "forgotten" conflict
A widow whose husband fought in the "forgotten" conflict in Malaysia 60 years ago has been presented with a medal from the Far Eastern nation.
Shirley Carmichael accepted the honour on behalf of her husband James, who died fifteen years ago.
It is a day that she didn't think possible.
She was given a medal from the Malaysian king himself to recognise her husband James' time fighting in the Far East more six decades ago.
Today's presentation in Mrs Carmichael's own front room was a far cry from the jungles of Malaysia, but very welcome for her and her family.
James Carmichael fought in what is sometimes refered to as the forgotten conflict when british soldiers served during the Malaysia and Borneo emergency in the 50s and 60s.
But now after a long struggle by veterans the Pingat Jas Malaysia medal is fully recognised and people like Shirley can wear it with pride.
