The slump of UKIP support in Basildon has handed the Conservatives victory there with an overall majority for the first time since 2014.
UKIP saw its share of the vote fall to 7% compared to 39% in 2014. The Tories improved their share by 16 percentage points and Labour was up 2 points.
Early turnout figures in the council elections in the Anglia region suggest only a third of voters bothered to cast their ballot.
All the political parties will be weighing up gains and losses in local elections across the Anglia region.
Counting will start at 10pm across the Anglia region in the local council election with results coming through in the early hours of Friday.
