Millionaire businessman shot by thieves in his home tells court of his ordeal

Video report by ITV News Anglia's Chloe Keedy.

A millionaire businessman has told a court of his ordeal after he was shot in his own home by intruders who mistakenly thought he was a drug dealer.

Father-of-two Timothy Mardon was in bed at his home in Sible Hedingham, Essex, in February when realised thieves had broken in.

Chelmsford Crown Court today heard the desperate 999 call he made.

A jury was played a phone recording in which one of the men threatened to "blow his face off', mistakenly believing the respected businessman was a drug dealer.

Mr Marden described how he leant against his own bedroom door as the intruders kicked it from the other side, before an "extremely loud explosion" threw him to the ground.

He said he realised he had been shot when he looked down to see blood "flowing freely" from his thigh.

"I thought the door had exploded. When I looked down I realised I was bleeding."
