Police have admitted they were already investigating the man jailed for murdering Northampton barmaid India Chipchase before her murder.
52-year-old Edward Tenniswood is serving a 30 year sentence for her rape and murder.
Northampton Police say they had spoken to Tenniswood about an incident in 2004 - which wasn't reported to them until last year.
It meant that when he was seen with India on CCTV footage they knew who he was and where he lived.
