An historic referendum on police funding in Bedfordshire has come out against an increase in council tax.
Bedfordshire's Police and Crime Commissioner Olly Martins had proposed a 15 per cent increase to council tax to pay for more officers. 91,000 people voted in favour, 207,000 voted against.
Responding to the vote, Mr Martins said the underlying problem had not gone away and that the force would remain overstretched.
The budget of Bedfordshire Police will now be £1.28million less in the current financial year than it was last year, and the cumulative impact of anticipated government funding cuts is currently projected to lead to a £6million funding shortfall. This will result in a recruitment freeze in the next 18 to 24 months and a reduction of up to 135 police officers, or 12% of our current strength.
